This isn’t about gadgets.
My mother got sick, and it took away her ability to move around her own house. She ended up in one room. Not because anyone put her there — because getting up and crossing the house cost her more than it was worth.
She’d leave the lights on all night. Every night. Not forgetfulness. It just wasn’t worth the pain of getting up to turn them off.
So we wired the house to her voice. Lights, thermostat, the locks, the front door. And a way to call for help — she could dial 911 out loud, from where she was, without reaching a phone.
None of that is a smart home. It’s a person getting her house back.
